As a proactive promoter of high standards among distance learning institutions, Distance Education and Training Council is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit association.
Membership
Founded in 1926, Distance Education and Training Council has more than 80 members.
A wide range of institutions make up as the members of the Council. From companies and trade associations to non-profit organizations to colleges and universities to military organizations to public universities to church-owned schools to schools offering free programs for the disabled to those teaching in Spanish to a Japanese university offering degrees in translation.
Role of Member Institutions
Member institutions of the Distance Education and Training Council offer more than 500 different academic and vocational courses. Most of the learning programs combine distance and residential study schemes. Enrollment at member institutions runs to more than 2 million students, with courses starting from the kindergarten level and going all the way up to the degree level.
Accreditation
It is public certification provided by a recognized body to an institution that successfully demonstrates its fulfillment of established educational standards. It enables institutions to attract large numbers of students as well as qualified people to teach on its faculty. Accreditation gives great credibility to institutions offering distance education.
Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission
Set up in 1955, the DETC Accrediting Commission evaluates and accredits distance learning institutions that maintain high operational standards in delivering distance education.
How to Become a Member?
There are two ways of becoming a member: Either the Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission identifies and provides recognition to an institution or the institutions apply to the Council for accreditation. At present, the Accrediting Commission has accredited 87 institutions.
Both public and private and distance learning institutions at degree and non-degree levels can apply Distance Education and Training Council Accrediting Commission for accreditation.
